You told us… Before we ran our Driving for Work Campaign in April 2008; we carried out a phone survey to 100 businesses in Lancashire. We asked them if they were aware of the new Corporate Manslaughter Law coming into force and if they were aware of their employers having policies in place to keep them safe on the roads.
We listened to you… Only 35% of respondents had received any driver training at work, 60% were not aware of any policies being in place at work and only 32% were aware that work-related road deaths were to be included in the new Laws. So we ran a big campaign across Lancashire through postcard distribution, press releases, radio interviews and articles in publications such as Vision, to raise awareness of the new law and promote our Driving for Work services and driver training.
RoadLife – Have your say
You told us… We give you the opportunity to tell us what you think about Roadlife and if you have any suggestions for future articles on the ‘Have Your Say’ page. Many people said they would like to hear more about how to help Learner Drivers and preparing for the test.
We listened to you… We published an article in 2007’s edition about our innovative interactive resource ‘Perfect Partner’, for Learner drivers and anyone who accompanies them.
You told us… A mystery shopper attended a Speed Awareness Course in November 2007. He reported that one point that arose from a number of participants, concerned the tone of the material and instructions received prior to the course. He suggested some of the language was a quite aggressive and left clients feeling “frightened” at the prospect of attending.
We listened to you… we have re-written and re-designed the Speed Awareness Course leaflet which clients receive prior to attending the course. It has been designed to be made welcoming and written to be easier to read and understand the aims of the course.
You told us… In the Life in Lancashire – Wave 15 survey, 36% of respondents told us they would prefer to find out about road safety information via Radio and Leaflets.
We listened to you… We have formed a strong partnership with BBC Radio Lancashire to run alongside our continuing work with the media. We have also recently supported Radio Lancs in developing a series of 15 second bulletins, covering a variety of road safety issues to play after each traffic and travel update on the station.
You told us… In the Life in Lancashire – Wave 15 survey, respondents identified that part of the Road Safety Group’s ethos is that road safety should be part of a child’s education and part of the curriculum.
So… the group launched a school resource called ‘Journeys’. It is a toolkit to assist the implementation of road safety services into the school community.
You told us… Local forums in the Burnley area raised community concerns about the safety of children travelling to and from Mosques. The teachers in the mosques have also asked for teaching resources to use during learning sessions with the children, to reinforce the practical learning given on the road.
We listened to you… We have produced a bespoke training package to train marshals to guide children safely across the road, at the safest places whilst reinforcing key road safety messages. We have also devised a risk assessment and recording process. This records the number of children participating so that usage rates, incidents and effectiveness can be monitored.
You told us… About various disabilities which could prevent you from attending one of our practical Driver Training Courses.
We listened to you… Induction loops/signers are available for hearing impaired clients. Driving instructors can offer specially adapted vehicles, or, by arrangement, disabled clients can use their own vehicles. For Driver Improvement Courses, clients can be collected from their home address. This is especially helpful for elderly clients who drive in limited environments.

“The Daily Journey is great. Both Tanja and I are really impressed, it will be extremely useful for us. We've already given a copy to our colleague in Merseyside who wants to pass it on to MerseyTravel as an example of good practice. We will send it to our key contacts in Brussels including people in the UK permanent representation, MEPs and the Commission.

“Being able to test my ability to drive after being off the road for 2 ½ years, in a safe and very supportive environment was just what I needed. Availability of a dual control car meant I felt safe for myself and other road users. I feel like it is worth getting a car and slowly returning to driving.”

“I was involved in an accident and was referred for the Driver Improvement scheme. The course was so valuable and I learnt such a lot. My instructor was fantastic as I had completely lost my nerve on the motorway and he got me driving safely on them again.”
