Roads

The primary role of the Roads Division is the design and construction of a wide range of highway works to National and County Council standards and requirements including major schemes, road improvements, safety and maintenance works on the County Council's highways, together with work for other authorities and external bodies.

The roads division carry out numerous services including:

  • The provision of an overall roads service, including all aspects of any new major road scheme that arises within Lancashire. This includes the design, the statutory procedures, the tendering process, the construction supervision and the monitoring. Also any changes to the layout of a road.
  • Ensuring that roads are brought back up to a certain standard. This usually involves resurfacing a road that is worn.
  • Ensuring that any works are constructed within the requirement of the contract. Works is defined as new roads, improvements, resurfacing, traffic signals, etc.
  • The design, tender and supervision of drainage for new or modification schemes for roads.
  • The design for the landscape or reclamation of a particular road scheme.
  • Traffic forecasting and route planning to plan for future traffic management and future expenditure.
  • The design of new traffic systems at junctions, crossing, new developments and so on.
  • The design of traffic signs in relation to Government specifications.
  • Maintaining the County's traffic light system.
