Castles in the Lune Valley

Whittington Motte

Whittington motte stands on a natural hillock on the west side of the village adjacent to Sellet Hall Beck and some distance from the River Lune ( see map ). It consists of a mutilated oval mound c.52m wide at the base standing some 3.5m above the crescentic bailey occupied by the church and churchyard. There are burials both within the bailey and on the motte, so the detail of their construction is now obscured. As at Melling and Arkholme it would seem likely that the church was founded as a manorial chapel in the bailey.
