For those unable to visit the Office in person - and for those who want to plan in advance of their visit - we can supply information about the records we hold. Such information is provided free of charge, but we prefer to deal with enquiries by letter, Fax and email - our public search room can be busy, and staff who are dealing with researchers in person are unable to pursue telephone queries.
We also offer an enquiry service. By this means we can supply, for a fee, a report on research into particular classes of records, some of which are normally unavailable even to personal callers in our Searchroom. These include searches for people in school records, police service records, closed hospital records (though not all hospitals for which we hold records) electoral registers and rate books, and also searches in vehicle licensing records. Please email your enquiry for details of costs.
A list of local record agents is available - for a fee, these agents will undertake research on your behalf in records held at LRO.
We offer a free Research consultation, designed particularly for educational enquiries - theses and projects on historical subjects - which will allow you to discuss your research needs with an archivist so as to identify likely sources. Click here to make an enquiry.
