Further information
Further information and advice on obtaining a British citizenship is available on the Home Office website or telephone their helpline on 0845 010 5200.
The Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002 included provisions that require all successful applicants for naturisation or registration as a British citizen, who are aged 18 or over, to take an oath and pledge at a citizenship ceremony, unless exempted by the Home Secretary. These provisions came into operation on 1 January 2004. The citizenship ceremony is intended to celebrate the significance of becoming a British citizen and welcome the new citizen into his or her community. It must take place within 3 months of the applicant being informed that the application has been successful.
Once successful, an applicant will receive a letter of invitation from the Home Office and a letter from Lancashire County Council's Citizenship Ceremonies Office setting out the dates and times of available ceremonies. The Lancashire County Council Citizenship Ceremonies Office can be contacted by telephone on 01772 326890.
Standard Ceremonies will be held at Accrington Register Office and The County Hall, Preston. For details of available dates please contact the Citizenship Ceremonies Office. You will be asked to arrive at 11.15am. Late arrival may result in your ceremony not taking place.
There will normally be between 15 and 20 new citizens at each ceremony. Alternatively, you may prefer to celebrate gaining citizenship in a more personal way with your family and friends at one of Lancashire County Council's approved venues. A private ceremony cannot take place at home. A list of venues is available from the Citizenship Ceremonies Office. There will be an extra cost of £95.00 for a private ceremony.
