Adult and Community Services

The Adult and Community Services Directorate (A&CS) was formed in 2005, from the merger of social care services for people over 18 with a number of cultural and community-oriented services. The Directorate is made up of:

  • Social care for older people (65+)
  • Social care for working age adults with mental health problems, learning disabilities, physical disabilities or sensory impairment
  • Social care for adults with substance misuse problems
  • Support for Carers
  • Library and Information Service
  • Museums Service
  • Arts Development Unit
  • Adult Learning
  • Student Services
  • Record Office
  • Registrars and Coroners
  • Welfare Rights
  • The Supporting People programme

What brings these different component parts of the Directorate together is a commitment to improving wellbeing for the whole community; wellbeing in this case referring to a much wider policy agenda than simply health promotion and prevention. Our services should enable people to take more control of their lives; should deliver better outcomes for people through improved partnership working and should take a 'whole community' perspective of health and social care issues.
